Hessian Studies

"If you like the music, you’re a metalhead. You like to buy certain things and listen to them.
If you like the ideas behind the music — the lifestyle, the worldview, the imagery and most importantly, the spirit — you need to use a word that means you are more than a consumer of metal music. You’re a Hessian. Derived from California slang from the time when Slayer were starting out, this term refers to the mercenaries who fought for both sides during the Revolutionary War — from Hesse, in Germany, they had long hair and fought like demons."

Damit wäre also eine neue definitorische Volte in den metal studies geschlagen. Das Programm der zu obigem Prolegomena gehörigen Hessian Studies ist schon lange online - genau genommen seit 1994!  Zeit also in einem historiographischen turn dieses Manifest noch einmal genau druchzusehen und der aktuellen Institutionalisierung der metal studies kritisch gegenüber zu stellen...

"What is Hessian Studies?
Hessian Studies is the academic study of Hessians, Bangers, Metallians, Metalheads, death rockers, and other adherents to the genres of metal and grindcore. The Hessian Studies Department believes that any truly diverse multicultural population will contain representatives of this world-wide underground culture, with its rich and spanning historical and social contributions.
What are the aims of the Hessian Studies Department?
The Hessian Studies Department seeks to establish a presence of Hessians on campus and in campus events, as well as to create a comfortable environment at The College that suits the specific needs of Hessians at a small liberal-arts college. To this end, we have presented a List of Demands to the Administration:

1. That there be Hessians hired to faculty and staff positions, and that all hair length rules and any form of drug policy regarding Hessians hired be abrogated, as Hessians have a religious need for some currently-regulated substances.
2. That there be a Hessian Studies Center, complete with both audio and textual libraries and lounge area, for the study and advancement of Hessians.
3. That the community radio station play more music favorable to the tastes of Hessians during prime-time shows.
4. That the inscription at the gate of the college be changed to either “Fuckin’ Groovin'” or “You Suffer (But Why?)”.
5. That discrimination against Hessians as a group of drug-addicted, drunken, long-haired incompetent losers destined for parole at best be eradicated from campus literature and mindset.
6. That there be Hessian cultural events on campus, including concerts by noted Hessian bands and festivals related to various organic products enjoyed by Hessians.
7. That the Hessian Studies Center be funded to provide late-night pizza and beer snack breaks.
8. That Hessians be given equal time to speak at multicultural events, and the right to develop their own curriculum of Hessian Studies Courses."

Gründungstreffen der European Education Alliance for Music and Sound in Media (EEAMS)

Ein Gründungstreffen der European Education Alliance for Music and Sound in Media (EEAMS) bei der SoundTrack_Cologne ist von Yati Durant (University of Edinburgh) und Vasco Hexel (Royal College of Music, London) avisiert worden.

"Yati Durant and I are pleased to have the opportunity to expand this new-formulation of the previous 'University Meeting Group' at SoundTrack_Cologne into a broad new initiative with enormous potential. The European Education Alliance for Music and Sound in Media (EEAMS) aims to grow a broad international network of higher education institutions that train students in the areas of filmmaking, sound design and media music composition. The Alliance welcomes educators, students and industry professionals of related areas and seeks to forge an inclusive framework to support collaborative links and to bridge inter-disciplinary boundaries. Ein kleiner Publikationshinweis zwischendurch: In KulturPoetik: Zeitschrift für kulturgeschichtliche Literaturwissenschaft Band 12.2 (2012) ist der empfehlenswerte Essay "Männer mit Äxten: Heroismus in der Populärkultur, das Imaginäre und Hard Rock. Gründung des deutschsprachigen Zweiges der International Association for the Study of Popular Music

Die IASPM-D-A-CH ist hervorgegangen aus der Vernetzung junger und etablierter Forscherinnen und Forscher unterschiedlicher Disziplinen und ist offen für alle an der akademischen Auseinandersetzung mit populärer Musik Interessierten. Sie widmet sich der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung populärer Musik weltweit und in all ihren Facetten, von ihren Anfängen im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart, in ihren lokalen, regionalen und transnationalen Spezifiken und ihrer Prägung durch Globalisierungs- und Medialisierungsprozesse. Die IASPM D-A-CH sieht sich als Mittlerin der Erforschung populärer Musik im deutschsprachigen und nicht-deutschsprachigen Raum. Dies betrifft die Vielfalt von Methoden wie auch die Diskussion um Begriffe und Theorien. Sie richtet regelmäßig alle zwei Jahre in Abstimmung mit der IASPM Tagungen aus, organisiert Workshops und initiiert Forschungsprojekte. In ihrer wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit populärer Musik sucht die IASPM D-A-CH ausdrücklich auch den Austausch mit Vertretern und Vertreterinnen der künstlerischen Praxis, der Kulturpolitik, der Musikwirtschaft und der Medien. Ein zentrales Ziel der IASPM D-A-CH ist die nachhaltige Verankerung populärer Musik in Forschung und Lehre an Universitäten, Musikhochschulen und Hochschulen der Künste sowie in den Gremien der Forschungsförderung in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Dafür nutzt sie die Erfahrungen im nationalen wie auch internationalen wissenschaftspolitischen Raum. CfP Heavy Metal and Popular Culture

April 4-7, 2013, Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, Ohio, USA)

The Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, in collaboration with Heavy Fundametalisms: Metal, Music and Politics and the International Society for Metal Music Studies (ISMMS), announce the International Conference on Heavy Metal and Popular Culture. The Program Committee of the International Conference on Heavy Metal and Popular Culture invites proposals for papers, organized panels of 3-4 papers, and scholarly posters. The online submission deadline for all proposals is 1 December 2012. The conference will take place on the campus of Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, April 4-7, 2013.
We envision the International Conference on Heavy Metal and Popular Culture to be a highly selective conference featuring cutting-edge scholarship on heavy metal’s many facets and forms. Papers will be organized into a single track of programming over four days—there will be no overlapping sessions.  Featured at the conference will be keynote lectures by Robert Walser, Laina Dawes, and Keith Kahn-Harris, a screening of the film Motörhead Matters, three roundtables featuring Niall Scott, Steve Waksman, Deena Weinstein and other international metal scholars to be announced, and a special exhibit on facepaint and masks.
We welcome proposals involving all facets of heavy metal musical life throughout the world, with a focus on the intersections, circuits, and mutual imbrications of heavy metal and popular culture, globally and locally. We especially welcome proposals addressing the following themes:
Heavy Metal Consumption:  In what ways has mainstream popular culture changed, prefigured or reversed the consumption of heavy metal?  How has heavy metal, as a subculture, sound or style, affected popular culture?   Are there new forms of popular culture for which heavy metal has become an influence?  Is the intersection of heavy metal, popular culture and consumption creating new questions about authenticity, aesthetics, and soundscape?  (In other words, what does it mean when obscure 1980s thrash metal tracks wind up on Guitar Hero?)
Heavy Metal, Popular Culture and New Media:  Given the rise of new media for heavy metal (social networking media, music and video systems online, gaming, music downloading technology), how has heavy metal further saturated the landscape of popular culture?   Are the sounds of heavy metal changing with new technologies and popular media?
Heavy Metal Clothing Style:  From the fantastic costumes of bands such as Gwar to the ubiquitous heavy metal t-shirt, the fashion of heavy metal is a vital part of its allure, its popularity, and its criticism.  Why is heavy metal style both controversial and popular?  Where and how has heavy metal style intersected with fashion locally and globally? 
American Heavy Metal Popular Culture and Its Circuits:  From films such as Heavy Metal Parking Lot to Kiss’ commercialism and the Osbourne family’s reality television programs, mainstream American popular culture has held a particular fascination for heavy metal, fomenting moral panics against it one day and celebrating its integrity and authenticity the next.  How did American popular culture and heavy metal become so mutually imbricated?  Are American popular culture’s heavy metal appropriations altering the scenes in other countries and cultures?  Do local scenes, including those within the United States, seek to resist mainstream popular culture or embrace it? 

Research Poster Sessions
The poster format provides an opportunity for conference attendees to meet informally with authors and discuss research. Each author attends her/his respective 60-minute session, distributes abstracts, and answers questions. Supporting sound and/or video examples (on personal computers and utilizing battery, rather than A/C power) will be coordinated with other presenters once the Program Committee has formed sessions.

General Guidelines
Accepted presenters will not be required to pay conference attendance registration fees.   The committee encourages proposals from graduate students and independent scholars.  An individual may submit only one proposal. All proposals must be submitted through the online electronic submission process.
Proposals must specify whether the proposal is for 1) paper, 2) poster, or 3) either presentation format, the latter to be determined by the Program Committee as it builds sessions. Individual or joint papers should be no longer than twenty minutes.  Posters will be organized in block sessions.   For complete session proposals, the organizer must include an initial statement of 100 words explaining the rationale for the session, in addition to proposals and abstract files for each paper.
Include the following for all submissions:
- Proposer’s name, e-mail address, and institutional affiliation or city of residence
- 250-word proposal
- 100-word version of your proposal suitable for publication in the conference program (.doc, .docx, .txt, or .rtf format). Include proposer's name and email, and the proposal title in this file.
 - Audio and visual needs: CD player, DVD player, digital projector. Please also specify IBM or Mac platforms, and any special needs.  Request of special audio and visual needs does not guarantee their availability, but presenters will be notified if their requests cannot be met.
- Specify whether you are a student.

Hard Wired-Symposium

Die Institutionalisierung der Metal Studies sind ein Projekt, dass Hand in Hand geht mit der Nobilitierung des Gegenstandes für die wissenschaftliche  Praxis - und umgekehrt. Das zumindest könnte eine Quintessenz des Hard Wired–Workshops sein, der Mitte April in Zürich stattgefunden hat.

Der Schwerpunkt des Workshops lag auf der Diskussion methodologischer Fragestellungen. Und als Fazit könnte hier postuliert sein, dass die Methoden so bunt und vielgestallt sind, wie der Metal selbst. Und das ist gut so: genauso wenig, wie wir je herausfinden werden, was denn nun wirklich der einzig wahre & true Metal ist wir es wohl je eine vereinheitlichte Feldtheorie der Metal-Studies geben. Was gut so ist.

Eine schöne Tagungsbesprechung, die die einzelnen Beiträge und Diskussionen nachzeichnet findet sich auf dem Avantgarde Metal Blog. An dieser Stelle als Ergänzung nur noch das „Ergebnis-Protokoll“ der diskutierten organisatorischen Schritte.

Der Workshop soll in schriftlicher Form dokumentiert werden. Florian Heesch und Anna- Katharina Höpflinger haben sich der Aufgabe angenommen dies zu organisieren. Dabei ist es den beiden HerausgeberInnen wichtig, dass die Artikel den Fokus konsequent auf die Diskussion der Methode legen und diese auch für ein transdisziplinäres akademisches Publikum nachvollziehbar darlegen. Die Artikel sollen bis Ende September 2012 eingereicht werden. Selbstverständlich ist der Band auch offen für Beiträge von Teilnehmenden, die am Hard Wired keinen Vortrag gehalten haben. In diesem Fall bitten die beiden um einen Arbeitstitel und ein kurzes Abstract bis Ende Mai 2012 an a.hoepflinger@access.uzh.ch.

Zur weiteren Zusammenarbeit wurde vereinbart, dass es nächstes Jahr einen weiteren, thematisch klar fokussierten Hard Wired-Workshop geben soll. Dieser wird in Wien stattfinden und von Sarah Chaker organisiert werden. Im Jahr darauf wir es dann ­­eine Wiederauflage von Metal Matters geben! Als erster Vorschlag steht jetzt eine große Tagung für den Sommer 2014 im Raum in Regensburg im Raum, Herbert Schwaab und Manuel Trummer fungieren hierfür als Verantwortliche.

Als Fazit also: ein anregender Workshop, ein Buch, ein Workshop, eine Konferenz; spannende Vorträge, laute Musik, angenehme Atmosphäre, Bier schmeckt auch in Zürich, und Metal ist nicht tot zu kriegen...

Förderpreis anybody?

ASPM schreibt 2012 erneut Förderpreis für junge Forscherinnen und Forscher auf dem Gebiet der populären Musik aus

Zum dritten Mal schreibt der Arbeitskreis Studium Populärer Musik e.V. (ASPM) einen Förderpreis für junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler für den besten deutschsprachigen Aufsatz aus dem Gebiet der Erforschung der populären Musik aus und lädt den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs herzlich zur Teilnahme ein. Thematisch und methodisch sind keine Grenzen gesetzt, so lange sich die Aufsätze mit populärer Musik im weiteren Sinne (d.h. auch Jazz, Schlager, Musical…) befassen. Die Jury des Preises, die aus dem Wissenschaftlichem Beirat des ASPM besteht, bewertet vor allem die innovative, originelle Thematik, die einwandfreie Methodik und die ansprechende sprachliche Form der Texte.
Voraussetzung für eine Berücksichtigung ist, dass die Artikel bisher noch nicht veröffentlicht wurden und dem ASPM das Erstveröffentlichungsrecht eingeräumt wird. Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sollten sich noch in der Qualifikationsphase (ab BA bis frühe Postdoc-Phase) befinden. Die Mitgliedschaft im ASPM ist keine Voraussetzung für die Bewerbung; gleichwohl richtet sich diese Ankündigung auch an den Nachwuchs in den eigenen Reihen. Das Preisgeld für den ersten Platz beträgt 300 Euro. Die Artikel der ersten drei Platzierten werden veröffentlicht; alle Preisträger erhalten eine einjährige kostenlose Mitgliedschaft im ASPM. Formal sollten sich die eingereichten Beiträge an den Vorgaben für die Online-Zeitschrift Samples orientieren (www.aspm-samples.de, >Hinweise für Autoren) und maximal 15 Seiten Umfang aufweisen. Bitte fügen Sie Ihrer Einsendung auch einen Lebenslauf mit wissenschaftlichem Werdegang bei. Berücksichtigt werden alle den Kriterien entsprechenden Artikel, die den ASPM bis zum 1. Juni 2012 als E-Mail-Anhang erreichen.

Home of Metal is a celebration of the music that was born in the Black Country and Birmingham, a project created and produced by Capsule. Bringing people together to share their passion and exploring themes of Heavy Metal through exhibitions, film screenings, live events, a conference and family friendly activities. Four decades since Heavy Metal was unleashed onto an unsuspecting world, Home of Metal honours a truly global musical phenomenon.

The Heavy Metal movement is littered with accounts of its origins, not only concerning the origins of the sound, but also the geographical and political locations from which the music evolved. As Metal has become a global phenomenon, over its 40 year history, the relationship between its sound to the various sites where those sounds, styles and fashions emerge is in constant evolution. However metal is simultaneously acutely aware of its origins In Birmingham and the Black Country.
The Home of Metal Conference on heavy metal and place aims to explore and evaluate the important role that location, heritage and place have in the origins of metal. It will serve to engage in debate concerning values, histories and myths in the foundation of this movement in Birmingham, the Black Country and beyond. It is a movement that is in continuous dialogue with its past and its origins most notably through bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zepplin and Napalm Death to name but a few.
Metal studies, being a new movement has not yet explored this area of place. This conference will not only serve to recognise the pivotal role that Birmingham and its surroundings has played in Heavy Metal and place, but will also be the first of its kind in being able to contribute to argument and debate in Metal studies, music studies, cultural theory, media theory and journalism. In addition to this, an interesting avenue of exploration is the dual origin of Heavy metal and Cultural Studies in the same decade in Birmingham.

Call for Submissions: Subversiv|Plakativ – Lyrics und Intertextualität im Heavy Metal

Geplant ist die Veröffentlichung einer Aufsatzsammlung zum Thema „Songtexte im Metal“, die sich u.a. mit Fragen der Rezeption und des Verstehens von Metal-Lyrics auseinandersetzt: Welche Themen werden verarbeitet und wie werden diese Themen präsentiert? Welche Bedeutung haben die Texte für den Fan und wie werden diese Bedeutungen ausgehandelt? Welche Relevanz haben Metal-Texte – als kritischer, populärkultureller Kommentar, als Möglichkeit der Weltflucht und als avantgardistische Literatur? Welchen Auswirkungen haben generische und intertextuelle Beziehung zu und textliche Auseinandersetzungen mit literarischen und mythischen Vorbildern? Die Publikation soll text- und kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen verbinden; darüberhinaus wird eine interdisziplinäre Sicht angestrebt, die musik-wissenschaftliche, historische und pädagogische Perspektiven umfasst. Sie richtet sich auch an ein nicht-wissenschaftliches Publikum, so dass Überblicksdarstellungen, ein allgemein verständlicher Stil sowie praktische Beispiele ausdrücklich erwünscht sind. Die endgültigen Beiträge sollen ca. 5000 bis 10000 Wörter umfassen; Abstracts von bis zu 300 Wörtern sollen bis zum 01.08.2011 gesendet werden an

Neuerscheinungen (bzw. Gründe Heavy Metal zu lieben Nr. 112-115)

Nachdem wir ja gerade eben schon auf Frank Schäfers neues Buch hingewiesen haben, sollen aber natürlich weitere Veröffentlichungen aus dem Konferenzumfeld nicht unerwähnt bleiben - zumal es ja stramm auf Weihnachten zugeht & man sich ja auch was für unter-den-Baum wünschen möchte (da gehört natürlich als allererstes diese Weihnachts-CD hin - aber das ist ein anderes Positing...) .

Zunächst wäre da also das (schon angekündigte) Buch von Dietmar Elflein: "Schwermetallanalysen. Die musikalische Sprache des Heavy Metal." Ebenso hier schon angekündigt - nun aber auch im Buchhandel das Buch "Kumpels in Kutten - Heavy Metal im Ruhrgebiet" von Christian Krumm und Holger Schmenk. Die bunte Mischung aus Interviews, Portraits, Randgeschichten und Fotos dürfte die bislang umfassendste und interessante Zusammenstellung der für das Ruhrgebiet so prägendenden Metalszene sein - auch hier unbedingt auf die Verlagsseite gehen und sich das knurrige Video mit "Onkel" Tom Angelripper zur Buchpräsentation ansehen.

Black Metal Theory (pt.2)

Nachdem vor einigen Tagen ja schon Sascha Pöhlmann die jüngst erschienene Publikation "Hideous Gnosis: Black Metal Theory Symposium 1" poientiert rezensiert hat, ist nun auch ein Text zu dem Buch und der Idee einer Black Metal Theory von Dominik Irtenkauf, Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Legacy“, online erschienen.

Das Transcix's Metal Archive (TMA) ist seit 2009 online. Wer (durch die Überschrift getriggert) hofft, seine CD-Sammlung via BitTorrent ergänzen zu können muss entäuscht werden: TMA ist eine gut gepflegte Link-Seite. "Online for short. Noch 100 Tage, um das Archiv der Jugendkulturen zu erhalten!

Liebe jugendkulturell Interessierte,
nun wird es ernst: Die Stiftungskampagne ist gestartet. Bereits in der ersten Woche sind mehr als 4.000 Euro bei uns eingegangen - auch auf diesem Wege vielen Dank schon jetzt an alle, die geholfen haben! Das Ziel - 100.000 Euro bis zum 31. Oktober - ist noch weit entfernt, doch ein Anfang ist gemacht! Warum gerade der 31. Oktober? wurde ich häufiger gefragt. Am 31. Oktober müssen wir entscheiden, ob wir unseren Mietvertrag kündigen oder verlängern. Letzteres wird ohne die Perspektive einer Stiftung nicht möglich sein. Wir, die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter, schaffen es einfach nicht mehr, jeden Monat privat das Defizit aufzubringen. Deshalb bitten wir weiterhin alle, die meinen, eine Einrichtung wie das Archiv der Jugendkulturen sollte weiterhin existieren, uns nun zu helfen: durch eine Spende (und sei sie auch noch so klein: Wenn nur 950 Menschen uns heute 100 Euro überweisen - oder 1.900 Menschen 50 Euro ...- haben wir unser Ziel heute schon erreicht!) und durch Verbreitung des unten anhängenden Aufrufs (der auch online auf unserer Homepage www.jugendkulturen.de zu finden ist) über Ihre/Eure Netzwerke, im Kollegen- und Bekanntenkreis!

Metal Workshop in Wuppertal

Am Dienstag, 13. Juli 2010 findet in Wuppertal ein Workshop zur Soziosemiotik des Heavy Metal im Rahmen eines Hauptseminars in der Germanistik statt. Mit Gastvorträgen von Dietmar Elflein (Schwermetallanalysen. Untersuchungen zur musikalischen Sprache des Heavy Metal) und Roland Seim (Normen und Grenzüberschreitungen: Zensur in der Rock- und Popmusik).

AG Populärkultur und Medien

In der Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft arbeitet seit einiger Zeit die AG Populärkultur, die natürlich auch ein wichtiger Ansprechpartner für Metallforschung ist. Aus deren Selbstverständnispapier: "Wenige medienkulturwissenschaftliche Konzepte sind seit jeher so eng verknüpft wie die Begriffe „Pop(ulär)kultur“ und „Medien“. Schon frühe Formen von Populärkultur waren an massenmediale Distributionsformen gebunden, allein um überhaupt Popularität in Anspruch nehmen zu können, ohne die sie wenig wirkmächtig wären. Die Auseinandersetzung mit populären Medienangeboten diente zugleich – nicht nur im Zuge der britischen Cultural Studies aber dort sicherlich zuerst in einer systematischen Form – der konsequenten Erweiterung des (medien)wissenschaftlichen Blickfelds und der Überwindung einer elitären Hierarchisierung kultureller Phänomene. Heute finden sich immer mehr gute Gründe dafür, die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit populärkulturellen Phänomenen als zentral für alle medienkulturwissenschaftliche Forschung anzusehen, weil Populärkultur sich als zuverlässiger Seismograph für Veränderungsprozesse erwiesen hat, die mit zeitlicher Verzögerung auch in anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen Relevanz erhalten. Diese besondere Bedeutung populärkultureller Phänomene wird vielerorts anerkannt, jedoch resultiert daraus nur selten ein systematisches Forschungsprogramm zur (Weiter)Entwicklung einer Theorie und Empirie von Populärkultur und ihrer medialen Formen. "

Metal & Gender

2009 fand an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln die von Florian Heesch organisierte internationale Tagung "Heavy Metal and Gender" statt, bei der ein beeindruckend Vielfalt von Zugriffsweisen und Perspektivierungen auf Metal aufgefächert wurde. Ein Tagungsband dazu scheint geplant, bis dato aber leider nirgends vorangekündigt. Allerdings geben eine Tagungsrezension und der im Metal Hammer veröffentlichte Tagungsmitschnitt schon gute Einblicke.

Fanethnologie

Eine der interessantesten und ergiebigsten Bereiche der Metal-Forschung ist sicher die Beschäftigung mit dem Fan (nebenstehend ein weiblicher Endstille-Fan auf der WGT2009, fotografiert von Birgit Richard). Neben wenigen und verstreuten wissenschaftlichen Ansätzen (bspw. eben von Birgit Richard oder Bettina Roccor und Birgit Simon im deutschsprachigen Raum) ist hier bis dato wenig gearbeitet worden.
In diesem Zusammenhang sei aber auf das engagierte Projekt Erika Beckers auf powermetal.de verwiesen: es finden sich dort einge sehr aussagekräftige Fanportraits
